The Perfect Blue

Blue is probably my all time favorite color. It is my go-to color for everything from home decor and accessories to picking out what I'm going to wear when I can't make up my mind. I consider blue a perfect neutral. The myriad of options, from a cool icy blue, to a saturated navy, or a warm teal, allow you to combine any number of accent colors to create your ideal space.

If doing an entire blue room seems a little adventurous, consider using blue in an unexpected way, such as blue stair rails, a blue front door, or even painting inside your white kitchen cabinets a bright robins egg blue.

White Out: Kitchen Inspiration

As an avid cook and passionate baker, a beautiful kitchen is essential. Nothing warms my heart like a classic white kitchen. Something about the purity of white cabinets, the glistening marble countertops, and the shimmer of chrome fixtures makes my heart melt. Throw in some industrial appliances like a viving range and a subzero fridge and I'm all yours. One thing I have realized though, is that classic can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. The smallest differences, like subway tile vs. a glass backsplash, or a stainless steel hood vs. a wood paneled one can have the largest impact on an otherwise similar set of white cabinets and marble countertops.

Pacific Dreams Dining Room

Many times, while shopping for clients, I find one item that inspires an entire room. Once I set my eyes on this Calypso rug I knew I had to feature it somewhere. My client ended up deciding on a simple braided hemp so in the mean time, I let my imagination run away with me and I came up with what I consider a charming dining room situated on a beachfront cottage somewhere.

vintage wish list

Often times I tell friends that the hardest part of being in the interior design business is that I fall in love with so many amazing items that it is nearly impossible to decide what to put in my own home. I often find myself "ooohing" and "aaaahing" over items I wish I could keep for myself even though it is intended for a lucky client.

In the recent months, I have had a new love affair with the brass heavy vintage glamour + lovechild hippiness from the 60's and 70's. What I used to consider garish and tacky I how adore as charming and eclectic. As a rule of thumb, I encourage every client (and friend asking for design advice) to incorporate at least one vintage item into their space. The patina and workmanship of long ago can not be manufactured, or replicated. Often times, I find that a vintage chair, dresser, side table or even a well work rug is the missing piece that grounds a room and instantaneously integrates a sense of warmth and history.

Behold, my personal wishlist favorite vintage finds:

a large Sciolari chandelier to bring retro glam into my home

a vintage suzani that can either be framed as wall art, or made into a great floor cushion.

Sweet Slip (covers)

As the days get longer and nights get warmer, I can't help but shift my thoughts to little things I can do to update my home with summer appropriate decor. My favorite way to revive and freshen a space is with a light and bright slipcover. A clean, linen slipcover immediately creates a casual, comfortable and airy vibe which I feel represents summer perfection. If you are considering slipcovers for your armchair, sofa or dining chair, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Will the piece have a lot of exposure to wear and tear? If you have small children or pets, but love the idea of white, you may want to consider using outdoor fabric indoors. Sunbrella fabrics come in an amazing array of colors and they are nearly indestructible. Liquid messes just bead off the acrylic fabric.
Is your sofa an odd shape or scale (extra deep, custom details, etc)? In this case, you may want to invest in having a slipcover custom made. Check sources online or ask for referrals. When doing custom work, make sure you describe everything you want as far as details and fit to ensure you aren't met with surprises once your product is finished.
Dining chairs can often be the easiest piece to slipcover. Find out what your chair style is, and obtain proper dimensions, then do a little online hunting. With sites like overstock, amazon, and wisteria, you can easily find slipcovers for classic chairs, like the parsons.

These sheer slipcovers allow you to appreciate the beautiful woodwork of the traditional chairs, but at the same time soften the room by adding a soft layer of fabric.

Details, like a button closure along the back, add interest and polish to an otherwise casual look.

The combination of a formal armchair with nail head trim mixed with slipcovered parsons chairs adds visual interest by offering an opportunity to add color and texture.

It's all in the details. These custom slipcovers have ballet ties along the leg, a pleated skirt, and the homeowner's monogram in a tonal color. Sometimes more is more.

Although all the elements in this room are quite formal, the tailored white slipcover still feels at home on the camel-back sofa. This is the epitome of being chic and casual at once.

This short slipcover looks contemporary by allowing the beautiful legs to remain exposed, almost feeling like a new upholstery rather than what most people would imagine as a traditional slipcover.

Moroccan Dream

I often find myself fantasizing about how romantic life would living in a beautiful artist's retreat in a distant country somewhere. My days would consist of picking fresh fruits and veggies from my garden to make my meals, painting scenes from the gorgeous view I would have, and being friendly with all sorts of worldly intellectuals who share the same passion for living the same casual chic lifestyle. Often, my little artist fantasy leads me to imagine myself in Morocco. I always envision Morocco as a magical place set somewhere between the ancient and the modern. There is purely whimsical about the centuries old homes, Moorish patterns, love of color, and being a notable retreat for artists and ex-pats from around the world. (I imagine this is where all the cool people converge to live fabulously).

With the backdrop of my little dream established, now it comes down to decorating my beautiful fantasy. Here are some inspirations and favorite items that I will be sure to incorporate. In fact, I think I may begin adding some Moroccan glam into my home to add a touch of the dream in the mean time. Happy travels!

My favorite part of this time of year is cozying up to a fire and enjoying the crackle of fresh firewood on a rainy night. It doesn't really feel like winter is here until I get to live out my warm and fuzzy dream. Often, creating this personal wonderland requires a little more effort because of the fresh firewood factor. However, if you create firewood storage as chic as these images below, I'm sure you will enjoy your warm and fuzzy winter treat quite soon. (Don't forget the cocoa!)

Black is Back... and so am I

Dearest blog followers, my apologies for such a long delay in blogging. The last several months have been more than hectic and I have neglected my beloved design blog. I have had many inquires about what happened and whether I will be starting up again, and to my delight, I'm here to say, yes! Although things at work are far from slowing down, I am going to do my best to blog regularly and keep you updated with the latest and greatest.

For this week's blog, I thought it best to go back to basics. We all have that one black item in our wardrobe that makes us feel ever so chic and polished. So, I dare to ask, why shouldn't that same black elegance translate into our interiors? Exactly. It should, and it does. I know many of you worry that black rooms make it feel smaller, claustrophobic, or depressing. But, I beg to differ. Take a peek at the photos I've posted below and you will see how elegant and sophisticated a black interior can truly be, without being overwhelming and goth. As a great designer once said, "more is more."

West Elm - Fab Finds and Designer Favorites

Last night, I attended a fabulous event hosted by the West Elm store in Santa Monica where they invited five designers to pick out their five "must haves" for chic living. I love the West Elm catalog and always look to them when I need some design basics, but going into the store and being able to see, touch and feel the products gave me a new admiration for the quality of the products West Elm produces. As one of the designers, Nicole Sassman, proclaimed, West Elm is like "design for dummies." Another designer whose work I've become a big fan of and was finally able to meet last night is Vanessa De Vargas, of Turqoise LA. It was a great event and I loved being able to see design through the eyes of so many talented professionals. Enjoy some of their favorites below, I know I already have my eye on a few pieces that would really complement my home, and with their affordable prices I can really go all out. Nature Walk Palm Springs

Palm Springs is one of my favorite places to go when it's time to escape to the hustle of Los Angeles. During this last trip, I was able to go for a little nature walk and snap some pictures of all the beautiful plant life. The diversity of plants are absolutely overwhelming, and I must say, I'm very happy with how the pictures turned out. I think that I will have to print out a series of photos for my own home - they will be a simple reminder that sometimes I just need to slow down and appreciate the little things.

Seeing Red...The Newest SBE Hotel

While making my design blog rounds this morning, I came across a pleasant surprise courtesy of casasugar.com. The LA nightlife guru, the SBE group is in near completion of their newest Los Angeles hotel, The Redbury. As a Los Angeles resident, I can say that the SBE restaurants and hotels have always been a pleasant treat. The design team spearheaded by Philippe Starck continues to break boundaries and surprise, the Redbury is no exception. Outfitted with English antiques and Persian carpets, each room feels more like a Bohemian love nest than a Hollywood Hotel. The soft opening is August 17th, who wants to share a room?

This month's House Beautiful issue is devoted to wood, and I found it completely inspirational. They covered everything from how to care for your wood furniture, reclaimed wood masterpieces, and an encyclopedia of information on the green woods of the world. Vacationing in Style: Architecture, Rest and Relaxation

When I go on vacation, I consider every part of the trip as part of the experience. All too often I've fallen prey to just booking at a typical hotel (Marriott, Westin, etc...) because I pretty much know what to expect. Problem with this approach is that regardless of the city we go to, the experience tends to become the same because there is only so much variation at these big chains. For those of you in the same bind, fear not, I have finally discovered a solution we can all benefit from. Next time I take a vacation, I'm going directly to Design Hotels because they deal exclusively with hotels that the slickest, chicest, and best designed hotels. When you look through the hotel profiles, you're not only given info on the amenities and location, but there is an entire profile on the design and architecture (so awesome).

Seeing Stripes

Is the circus in town? No, but these playful striped rooms bring whimsy and interest to any small space. Contrary to popular belief, adding stripes to a smaller space will actually create the illusion of a larger room because the bold pattern keeps the eye moving and doesn't let you focus on one area like a solid color would. This may be too bold a move for you to employ in your own bedroom or living room, but it works very well in a powder room, or smaller guest room. Just think of how much guests will enjoy their stay in such a playful home. Besides, with all of the downtrodden news about recessions and job losses, couldn't we all use a little more fun in our lives?

Hello to all my followers. Many of you have been asking where the updated blogs have been, and I admit, it has been quite a hectic last three months, and blogging took the back burner. Since December we bought a house, I finished my Masters in Interior Design, and got married, yay!!! Now that all the madness has died down, I am full force on the blog-sphere. Not to mention that I have a whole house now that can serve as my design guinea pig. Thank you all for your patience, and I hope you enjoy the new posts of 2010.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Although I may be a bit late to post my complete holiday wish list, I can share my favorite home items with you so that you can do a little holiday shopping for yourselves in time for gift-giving. Mirrors are a wonderful way to bring light and life to a room. Besides their functionality and being able to make sure that you don't have lipstick on your teeth before walking out the front door, the myriad of frames and styles available ensure that you will find one to make your room feel complete.

Starburst mirrors are a classic. This was actually the first decorative item I purchased for my new home. I always wanted a console table at the entry with a fun mirror above, and starburst was the way to go. The retro design adds such whimsy to a room.

Convex mirrors are one of my all-time favorite home accessories. They look amazing in any space - from a modernist grouping to a traditional federalist one. The convex (also known as fish-eye) shape of these mirrors allow you to see most of the room in the reflection. It might not be something you want to put over a console, or as a mirror to check your hair, but they are fun over a fireplace or as an accent on a wall, as if you were hanging art.

This mirror lives in the Pennsylvania governor's mansion, and is still in it's original gilded frame, from 1820. If you want to buy your own federalist reproduction, 1stdibs.com is a great place to start looking.

Blue Room

Blue Room...
You saw me standing alone,
Without a dream in my heart,
Without a love of my own...

Well, no need to despair, these blue rooms will fill your heart with all kinds of love and inspire some wonderful dreams. I have always been the girl who loved all things blue - whenever I had to choose between something pink or blue, I always preferred the latter. Why should home decor be any different? These rooms run the gamut of blues and demonstrate the many tints and tones of blue as well as the limitless colors you can use for your accents. Contrary to what you may believe, the right color blue can be a neutral and soothing backdrop for your art, and looks surprisingly good against the warm tone of wood floors. I actually love the look so much that I have decided to use blue in three different rooms in my new home. The foyer is a deep navy, the master bedroom is another deep, dark blue, and the office is a soft, light, winter blue. (pictures will follow as soon as everything is actually designed and the rooms are no longer empty)

In the mean time, just enjoy and consider these the good kind of blues. :-)

Persian Rugs Gone Modern

I love it when readers give feedback via my blog and help stimulate the design process. One of my dutiful readers asked me to post some ideas and inspiration on how to incorporate a Persian rug she has into the modern design she desires. After some research and dedicated time looking for images sure to make anyone want a Persian rug of their own, I found a few gems I would like to share. And, in order to help my dear reader with her dilemma, I have devised some simple tips and tricks that are sure to make her home look spectacularly put together and well-designed.

Start with the rug first. Although this may seem obvious (she's asking about a rug she already owns), many people make the mistake of looking for the rug as a last accessory once the room is furnished. This will become a nightmare process, and I do not advise taking this route. Find a rug you love, then build the rest of your decor around it. Which takes me to rule #2....
Your rug establishes your palette. Take a close look at the images below and notice how harmonious the rooms feel - regardless of how busy or colorful the rugs may be. These rooms work because all of the color in the room (from furniture, to wall color, to window coverings and hardware) is cohesive because it all originates from the rug itself. Note how even the vibrant red and black rug in the fifth image works in the very bright and contemporary space - it is because the black/burgundy armchairs anchor the rug and bring the color up into the living space and off of the floor.
Be aware of the pattern and your furniture groupings. If you choose a rug with a medallion in the center or something with a very obvious center, then know that your furniture needs to be arranged accordingly on the rug, with the seating near the perimeter facing inward. This will feel the most natural because your rug is already drawing the eye toward it's center, and once the seating follows, guests will love sitting there because it will feel naturally cozy and quite intimate. Notice the great example in image #6.
Size isn't everything. If you absolutely fall in love with a rug and it meets all of your design and color needs, but it's just too small to fit your space, don't despair - there is a great designer trick to making it all still work. I learned this trick while interning under the fabulous Peter Dunham - simply cut a sisal (or any natural fiber rug) to the appropriate size you would want your rug, then place your gem of a Persian rug over the sisal, and centered. This works very well, because the sisal become a frame for the rug, and you still have the feeling of having something soft underfoot. I posted an example of this in image #7, which is one of Peter's projects.
Lastly, have fun! Design is never very serious, it is about expressing yourself and making your space feel comfortable for you. Enjoy every item you put in your home and take your time, you will appreciate your space much more that way.

Dream Real Estate

Dreams really can come true. How is this for designer real estate? This gem would make all of my birthday/anniversary/christmas/kwanza/channukah dreams come true. If there ever was a Palm Springs palace, this surely would be it.

Here is an excerpt from the listing:

Known as The Elrod House, this John Lautner-designed home was commissioned by designer Arthur Elrod in 1968 and has been featured in numerous books, magazines and museum exhibitions. R.I.P. Metropolitain Home

It is another very sad day in the world of design. Another of our beloved publications (and a personal favorite) is folding. Metropolitan Home will be no longer, and their last issue is officially going to be their December issue. This recession is reeking havoc on the world of design publications, so sad. Personally, I'm disappointed that all of the great inspiration images and resources will no longer be available for us to use. For the full article, click here.

Pullin the Rug Out

Are you feeling like it's time to spruce up your living room? Bored of your "look" and want to add some flavor to your space. Well, I have just the remedy you need for your design blues, treat yourself to a new area rug. I adore the way a fabulous rug can add texture, color and warmth to an otherwise stark room. Also, don't be daunted by your existing flooring - even if you have carpet, stone or hardwood, you can find a rug to spice up your space.

For those of you saving all your $$'s for Black Friday shopping and want to re-design on a budget, here are some great options:

Cost Plus World Market – they have a lot of great prints and natural materials, plus a diverse selection of prints, stripes and solids.
Anthropologie Home – if you want something on the funkier side with bolder patterns and brighter colors. A lot of their stuff has a more ethnic vibe. (Although these might be on the more expensive side of the budget-friendly spectrum)
West Elm – a great resource for simple, more neutral options. (they’re owned by Williams Sonoma, but the more contemporary offshoot) I actually really love their things and have looked a lot for myself.
Ikea– I know, you’re thinking college dorm. However, they have really vamped up their design and are actually getting very good at knocking off designer pieces. I saw the “real” version of their black/white block rug on the cover of Elle Décor. They are also a great source for natural fiber (like jute or sisal) and kids' room rugs.

Alpan Bawa - Color Me Happy

While browsing the internet for gorgeous pillows (see last week's post), I came across a very inspirational designer, artist, and photographer, Aplan Bawa. Her whimsical prints and fearless use of color combinations make every me feel like a kid in a candy store. In an excerpt from her website: "Her burgeoning creative endeavors are a testament to a daring designaesthetic that is unmistakably, not to mention, uncompromisingly her own. Call it Bawa color—what sets her pieces apart, be it an embroidered wrap dress or appliquéd pillow, is a blazing, 100-watt palette that boasts every color of the rainbow. She swings effortlessly from constructivism to whimsy, casual to evening, and apparel to soft furnishings. But there's always one constant: her reliance on intense, super-saturated color in all aspects of her work." The source of Bawa's inspiration is India in the 70's, where she remembers vivid crimson, saffron and indigo as the scene of her childhood. As she remembers it, "this was a place where women draped from head to toe in silk dyed, embroidered and embellished in a kaleidoscope of iridescent shades were as ubiquitous as sun-kissed mangoes fresh from the tree."

Lonny = Life After Domino

For many of us, designers and design fans alike, Domino magazine was a standard in our sea of references. We could always count on their editors to provide us with the latest products, delightful inspiration rooms, and plenty of instruction on how we too can look so effortlessly chic. I know it was a sad day for many when we got word that the publication was coming to and end. I assumed that my stash of two years worth of magazines would be my only lifeline.

Dear friends, there may be a light at the end of the design tunnel after all. From the editors of Domino (plus a very talented team of designers, and industry insiders) comes a new online design magazine, Lonny Mag

Although I was a bit skeptical of being able to fall in love with a virtual magazine, I have to admit that their interactive format and embedded links (if you click on certain products you like, you are directed to their manufacturer's website - awesome!) have won me over. There is already a large internet following, and they even have their own Facebook fan page. So, get your glass of wine, and cozy up to your laptop because you are about to fall in love all over again. Enjoy!

Precious Pillows

A great throw pillow is like a great new pair of shoes. It can polish your look and bring all the elements of your outfit/room together like a perfect ensemble.

One of my all time favorite design resources is John Robshaw Textiles. Their interpretation of Indian block prints, patterns, and hand-dyed fabrics have spurned a gorgeous variety of pillows, bedding, shams, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can always buy their fabrics by yard.

Lauren Saunders has a brilliant collection of loomed pillows which you can purchase directly from the designer, or select from her gorgeous yarns to create your own couture design.

Anthropologie has always been a fantastic place to shop for clothes, and not it has become a great recourse for home accessories and furniture. Their diverse collection of pillows lends a funky flair to any space. They remind me of something I might find in a Bazaar, or in a romantic Bohemian village.

Delightful Dining Rooms

As we get closer to the holiday season, I find myself spending more and more time dreaming about huge feasts in the dining room with piles of friends and family. Besides, what better reason is there to consider a dining room re-design than the holidays? I've included some very wonderful designer dining rooms for you all to take a look at. One element that I really love is how designers are taking a gutsy approach to mixing and matching chairs, tables and light fixtures from a multitude of genres. I've also included some links to favorite places where you can purchase some of the really standout items in the rooms.

This dining room by Jonathan Adler truly speaks to the designer's passion for color and pizazz. The standout Chinese Chippendale chairs are also available through Adler's website, just click here.

The coral chandelier featured as the standout item in this room is a pared down version of the signature piece by Marjorie Skouras (one of my all-time favorites).

Hans Wegner' Danish modern chairs are a designer's dream. I've seen them featured in a contemporary setting as well as mixed in with traditional elements. They are a wonderful addition to any home.

Clear plastic chairs for your dining room, really? YES! Having Lucite or clear furniture in a space brings in light, airiness and a fun, futuristic vibe to any space. One of the classics is the Kartell Ghost Chair.

Bravo, Encore, Bravo!

What happens in Vegas ends up on blogspot.

After a wonderful weekend in Las Vegas with some friends, I was delighted to see how much good design has become part of the luxurious Vegas experience. We stayed at the Encore, at the Wynn, and I have to confess, I spent a good part of my time running around the hotel taking pictures so I could share the wealth.

This is the gigantic chandelier illuminating the port cochere. The painting in the cove has a 70's Pucci feel, no?

The bar at the entry has so many gorgeous design elements, notice the trellis ceiling and the rib vault, then there is the bar which looks like an outdoor folly, and lastly (my favorite) the lit up crystal peacocks which flank either side of the bar's entry.

This is the central dining area at the Encore's Buffet. It has a very "Elsie de Wolfe" feel to it. I was immediately reminded of the Trellis Room at the Colony Club, New York.

The shopping promenade plays on the trellis theme as well. I wish I had a better closeup of the chandeliers because they are a composition of hand blown glass bubbles. It looks like candy.

Red was a prominent color design-wise at the Encore. These gorgeous murano glass chandeliers greet you upon entry at the reception area. I don't think the pictures do them justice - each one had to be about 5 feet in diameter.

In continuing with the red theme, this sculptural light fixture is the focal point of one of the cafes in the casino. It's organic, architectural and just crazy enough to fit perfectly into Vegas decor.

The same cafe has these GORGEOUS mosaic floors throughout the dining area and bar. It was so luxurious to have this mosaic "carpet" underfoot, and not just reserved as an accent in certain corners.

These were the entry doors to one of the offices, but the vamped up Hollywood Regency style made them a great design element in the lobby.

The spa at the Encore was one of my favorite spaces because it's design was so unlike typical spa design. This composition is so well done, and feels like something I would see in Elle Decor, not a hotel spa. Notice how the trellis pattern shows up again in the smoked mirror tiles.

After walking through the spa lobby, on the way to the pool, you reach the spa shop, which is tented a la Dorothy Draper. It is a great play on the bold stripes and tented ceilings she made so famous.

The high roller concierge has a more pared-down transitional vibe compared to the rest of the casino. This style continues upstairs into the landings and suites. I think the symmetry and neutral palette are key elements in creating the sophisticated feel such a room requires.

This console is upstairs at the elevator landing. I would buy this in a second - it is a very chic interpretation of the Hollywood Regency Glamor made famous by Dorothy Draper.

This is the living area in the guest rooms. The black/beige combo is so refreshing, it felt like a little bit of an 80's throwback, but I did enjoy it.

The bar in the rooms was built into this Art Deco commode, which was a nice complement to the black and beige palette. Note the herringbone accent wallpaper - so fun.

One of the design elements I've decided to take away from this room is the use of black sheers behind lighter drapes (which I otherwise would have thought of as a design no-no.) I also love the black trim at the base and crown.

SuperFab Floral Arrangements

Yes, the winter months may be fast arranging, and a post about floral arrangements may seem a bit odd, but the way I look at it, the next several months are all about parties, entertaining, and celebrating with friends and family. What better excuse than the holidays to vamp up your home with some gorgeous arrangements to bring life and vivacity to the festivities. Florists today have truly stepped outside "the box" when it comes to creating arrangements. The selection of flowers and foliage are as adventurous as ever, and it seems that clients are requesting more and more avant grade design, allowing the creative juices to flow.

For those of you who would like to do the dirty work, I highly recommend an early morning visit to the Los Angeles Flower District. This is the source for all florists in the city, and it opens to the public at 8am for a fee of only $2. I went for the first time a couple months ago and fell in love. Here are some pictures of my adventures in the flower market.

Flowers as far as the eye can see...

Have you ever seen such pretty calla lillies? I could fill an entire room with these.

I loved the dichotomy of the fluffy blue hydrangeas and the very architectural calla lilies.

I have no idea what these are called, but they are amazing.

This is most of what I came home with. I decided on doing tightly packed arrangements of carnations (cheap and pretty) and then clusters of kangaroo paw and wild greens for the powder room.

So consider, for your next soirée, how you too can shake things up a little and impress your guests with some vamped up arrangements. Obviously, you will need some great containers to complete your look.

Not always something you would consider, but pitchers make gorgeous vessels for flowers.

They look chic in a casual way.

To recreate the look above, this teal blue pitcher would be a great choice.

This one from The Teapot Shoppe looks like it was a family heirloom that you ever so gracefully decided to use for flowers.

This silver pitcher is sure to be a hit with or without flowers, it is something to cherish for generations.

Tea Time, Designer Style

This morning finally felt like we've entered into fall, and I have to admit that I'm pretty excited. Not only does fall mean changing leaves, brisk weather, cozy sweaters and chic boots, but it gives us a chance to retreat into our homes and start enjoying the luxury of all things domestic. One thing I enjoy above all else once the weather gets a bit chilly is to make a pot of tea, and cozy up under a blanket. Once I have my tea and my blanket I'm armed to enjoy anything, including read a book, watch TV, do work online, or just find more fabulous things design. Of course, in order to stay warm and be chic, a Snuggie and a Lipton teabag just won't cut it.

Here are some tools that not only get the job done, but make wonderful decor additions to your home even when you're not bundled up next to a fire.

Greystone Glorious - what a mega mansion should be

The historic Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills is a must-see for any dedicated lover of all things fabulous. I adore this home because I consider it a romantic throwback to the Golden Era of Great Gatsby, Prohibition Glam, and pure decadence. Every year Veranda magazine utilizes the unoccupied mansion to host their annual designer showhouse. This even draws some of the biggest names in design, including Rose Tarlow, Peter Dunham, Mary McDonald, and Windsor Smith. For those of you who are outside of Los Angeles, or who haven't had a chance to see the Mansion's pictures, I've uploaded some of my favorites here. (All photos are from Veranda.com)

You Don't Have to Turn on the Red Light...

As warm summer nights become brisk fall breezes, I find myself yearning for all things warm and cozy. One failsafe method for achieving instant warmth is utilizing the right combination of colors as a mental trigger. For me, red (and all shades brick, rusty, scarlet, and maroon) evoke sensations of sitting by a warm fire, changing autumn leaves, and bottles of red wine. Something about red just gets my blood going (lame pun, but I had to throw it in.)

Below are some ideas for incorporating red into your home in a chic, modern way. These pieces give just the right punch and maintain traditional elements, without loosing their edge.

Beds Worth Dreaming About

With the hectic lifestyles many of us have, we often neglect to pamper ourselves a little bit. Perhaps the greatest form of papering is to create a retreat for yourself in the bedroom where you find yourself utterly relaxed and ready for a good night's sleep. I wholeheartedly endorse keeping bedrooms free of computers and work-related activities, so that it is solely a place for rest and relaxation. If you add a wonderfully designed bed to the space as well - something that is so beautiful that you can't wait to go home and sleep in it - then I guarantee sweet dreams.

Wallpapered Poweder Rooms

If you haven't noticed, wallpaper is back in a big way, and the options have never been so glamorous. Patterns are bolder, and colors more vibrant. From over-scaled damasks to nature-inspired motifs to 70's graphics, designers are pulling inspiration from everywhere. For many clients, the idea of using wallpaper still gives them flashbacks of their grandmother's house full of stuffy plaids and overwhelming pastel flowers. The remedy I offer for this condition is to start small, and with a room that will not be somewhere you spend a lot of time. Solution? Ah, yes.... the powder room.

Wallpapering the powder rooms offer homeowners the perfect opportunity to add glamor without feeling overwhelmed. Powder rooms are small, often reserved for guests, and do not retain much moisture because there is no shower or tub involved, making it the perfect first-time wallpaper candidate. I've become such a fan of wallpaper that I've resorted to this analogy: Wallpaper is to Paint, as Silk is to Nylon. You wouldn't want to dress yourself in nylon when you can have silk, so why would you do that to your powder room? Can you really compare? I think not. Go for it, be inspired. Take over that neglected powder room and find a wallpaper that pushes your design sensibility a little and takes some risks.

If you feel inclined to design your own wallpaper or wall graphic, then Great Wall Custom Wallcoverings is for you.
Even Sherwin Williams offers substantial selection of wallpapers, borders, and murals, especially in kid-friendly patterns.
For good measure, if you are interested in period prints like the original William Morris Victorian wallpapers, you must visit Bradbury & Bradbury

Chairs: Functional Conversation Starters

I am a firm believer that every living room should have one piece of statement furniture - something that is a "WOW" factor. My favorite choice for statement furniture is an awesome chair. Chairs are a great choice because is is an item that you and your guests can experience rather than just looking at. Everybody knows the feeling of sitting in an chair that makes them feel like a rockstar, so why not bring that experience into your home??? These are some personal favorites. (I've already decided to purchase the Skeleton Chair for m home.)

Knockout Nurseries

I was recently honored to become an aunt for the first time when my sister had her daughter, Leila. Of course, one of the first things I did when I found I was going to become an aunt was to start developing design ideas for the future nursery. To my delight, I discovered that nursery design has become quite the birthplace of modern stylish decor and innovative design. It seems parents have finally moved away from "blue is for boys" and "pink is for girls" and expanded the color palette of their children's rooms to include sophisticated combinations of color that would please an adult as much as a child. Below are some favorite nurseries, and I would have to say, little Leila would have a stylish little pad with any of these.

Some great resources for your nursery:

Serena and Lily - an amazing place to shop for organic bedding, mattresses, and all of it in chic patterns any adult would love.

Modern Nursery - complete with swanky baby gadgets, mid century-modern inspired furniture, and innovative toys not available at your local Toys 'R Us, this is a must for a new parent.

Art is Where the Heart is

Very often, I find that when it comes time to discuss a new furniture or design plan with a client, one of the last items they consider, and one of the last places they want to spend their money is on art. I have to say, this is still surprising to me, because a piece of art can add life and vitality to any space, and often becomes just the element your room needed to tie everything together. Art can be expressed in nearly any medium, and can be as diverse as a family heirloom, to a drawing you did when you were five and your mother decided to frame it. Regardless of where your tastes may lie, I encourage you all to take the time to explore the work of the many talented artists we have (especially in the Los Angeles Area) and visit some of the Art Walks around the city, where you can browse galleries, meet with artists, and schmooze with art affectionados and tourists, all in one shot. I went last week to the Art Walk in Downtown LA and I loved it - I will definitely be going back again to the October event.

Library Love

Personally, a trip to the bookstore is like going to adult Disneyland. I get lost in all of the books, the stories of far off places, and am memorized by the artistry of art and coffee table books. For all of you fellow book lovers, (especially in the Los Angeles Area) Sunday, October 4th is the West Hollywood Book Fair. This is a can't miss event; there are guest speakers, activities for children, stages, artists, and storytellers.

Once you've gone to the fair and purchased your bags of books, you are going to need somewhere to put them. In order to inspire you, I've attached some of my favorite library images. Enjoy!

Shag-a-dellic

Last week, I met with a wonderful couple who were purchasing a home and decided on a design consultation before closing escrow. They warned me in advance that the home needed updates, but I don't think I was prepared for what I found when I walked in. To my joy and amazement, this home had not been touched since it was built in the 1960's. This meant there was still the original shag carpet in mustard yellow, original flock wallpaper, and original light fixtures. I was so excited to be in such a time capsule, I had to take pictures and share.

And we know it was built in the 1960's because there is mustard yellow shag carpet in the bathroom. I died when I saw this.

Design Project: Entertainment Room in the Oaks

What better way for you to get to know Sharon Taftian Interior Design than to see some of our projects as they develop? The design process can often be daunting to new clients, and I have often found that it helps when I present everything in layers. The following are some drawings and renderings I completed for a family who wanted to design an entertainment room in a new addition to their home. They are a great family who have four young kids and love to entertain. This all purpose room would provide a place to entertain guests, play pool, watch TV, and with the new NanaWalls they added, it was truly indoor-outdoor living at its best.

The first step was to establish a floor plan and configure the furniture layout.

The custom bar was huge for the clients, so the next step was to develop a conceptual sketch of what the bar would look like. This was their favorite option.

After that, we began detailed drawings of the inside of the bar. These clients wanted amenities like an ice maker, refrigerator, and a wine cooler. I can only imagine the fabulous parties they're going to have when this is complete.

This promises to be a great final product and I'm very excited to see how much these clients enjoy the bar when it's finished. Keep an eye out, I will post pictures as soon as the room is complete.
